Colour & Song
Colour & Song - an event
An evening of live music and live painting — and you’ll take home your own mini watercolour. Husband-and-wife artist duo John & Ali Davies invite you into their world of quiet creativity. John’s classical guitar, songs, and spoken word fill the room while Ali brings each piece to life in delicate watercolour, revealed one by one.
At the night’s end, every guest leaves with an original painting — a piece of the evening to treasure.
Upcoming dates:
Sat Dec 6, Earthsong, Ranui, Auckland
Sat Jan 24, Bethells Beach, Private Residence of Anna Marbrook

Where did the idea come from for Colour & Song?
"For me, social media promotion creates a tension that is not necessarily a bad thing; it's just another problem that needs to be solved creatively. I want to share my work, but I don't feel comfortable with some of the trends that dominate social media. I'm learning about watercolour, and I want to share the joy and process with real-life people.
While the time-lapse content of artists' creations is extremely compelling to watch, I do wonder about the effect of making something that takes days, or weeks or years to make, not to mention the skill acquired over a lifetime, come together on speed, even 2 minutes is a disservice to the mana around creating art, and telling stories. Story is one of the main things that is lost in the whole process when all you see is a ‘before & after’ in under 60 seconds.
Colour & Song, in many ways, is a response to this issue - I want to resist the temptation to create content that panders to the 3-second rule; if I don’t catch your attention in 3 seconds, it's all over.
I recognise that having time constraints can be creative, especially in film, but let's not forget that art should bring people together, and it doesn't have to be ‘art’; the creative energy can be shared and enjoyed, not rushed. Colour & Song is about the simple act of doing, of the choice I made, and my husband made, to live a creative life." Ali Davies
