Pōhutukawa – After Bloom | Linen Tea Towel
A new, fresh, timeless print of one of New Zealand's favourite trees.
Colourways: Ocean Spray & Night Sky
From pencil sketch beginnings while living in French Bay, Titirangi, in 1993, to what has become a signature pattern, a textile range, and the design Ali Davies has returned to more than any other. Pōhutukawa – After Bloom is its latest iteration — for the first time, printed on 100% Linen and sold exclusively through Ali Davies.
This particular design is inspired by the Pōhutukawa in Autumn, after the bloom has passed and the tree settles back into itself. Where earlier versions of this print were screen printed with minimal colour — built on negative space, and edited for effect — this one is drawn in pencil and pen, with the flowers painted by brush for contrast and lightness. The blooms may have finished, but they haven't disappeared; they are just dormant, waiting for the next season.
The full colour background adds depth and drama.
The print is produced using digital printing with eco-friendly, water-based pigments and dyes, on Ali Davies' linen. Digital printing enables the full-colour background and fine illustrative detail required by this design — and ensures it is produced in small runs with minimal excess waste.
The Pōhutukawa is one of New Zealand's most culturally significant trees. In Māori tradition, the ancient tree at Cape Reinga marks the place of leaving — where spirits of the deceased begin their journey. Pōhutukawa is the star in the Matariki cluster (also known as the Pleiades), connected to those who have passed away and depending on its visibility or brightness, to those who are yet to pass. It blooms brilliantly in summer and is a constant companion throughout the rest of the year. It grows and flourishes in harsh, rocky, coastal conditions. A symbol of endurance — and for Ali, a design that mirrors that: beginning, ending, beginning again.
These tea towels are produced in very small quantities, are not available for wholesale, and are sold exclusively here at Ali Davies Home.
