This lovely piece is hand woven out of rattan for Trade Aid. They work with partners in Vietnam who support three types of artisan groups. They help traditional craft producers retain skills passed down over generations, ethnic minorities located in mountainous regions retail their cultural skills, and artisans with disabilities including those affected by Agent Orange.
Mat measures 25cm diameter and is slightly raised.
Rattan is the name of roughly 600 species of climbing palms around South East Asia. Not like other palms in that they have very slender stems and most cannot stand on their own. They have spines which act as hooks to climb over other plants and have been known to grow up to hundreds of meters long.
