Patterns of New Zealand 'Good Luck - Dusk' Tea Towel
Good Luck - Dusk
Our tea towel named ‘Good Luck’ contains a symbol representing a carved fish hook which is familiar to us all in New Zealand. Māori legend teaches us that the North Island was once a huge fish that was caught by Maui using only a woven line and a hook made from the jawbone of his grandmother. The Māori name for the North Island is, ‘Te Ika a Maui’ (the fish of Maui) reflects this legend. Today the carved fish hook is a cultural treasure representing not only our land, but prosperity, fertility, safe passage over water, and the importance of our relationship to Tangaroa god of the sea.
